Everyone loves Jiu-Jitsu! Yes it’s tough and we all face challenges in our training… but ultimately we keep going back because we love it. It gets us in the best physical and mental shape of our lives… we have fun waging “war” with our friends… we get to be part of an amazing community… we learn something worthwhile and empowering… and for so many more reasons we love this gentle art. For most it’s our “secret garden”. We go there to get away from life… work…technology and we get to be part of a holistic community of likeminded people. For these and many more reasons Jiu-Jitsu has a way of transforming lives. The challenge has been that it’s ‘our little secret’. It’s time to let the secret out and get everyone we know practicing the gentle art. I believe that Jiu-Jitsu can not only transform lives it can transform communities which can ultimately alter the world! If we want to make an impact globally then we have to act locally. It’s time to let the secret out and get everyone we know practicing Jiu-Jitsu. As leaders in the martial arts community it’s our job to make sure we are doing an amazing job inspiring others and teaching the art responsibly. This includes keeping students safe while training, professionalism in the classroom and welcoming everyone into the fold. It also means spreading Jiu-Jitsu into our local communities. Here’s some tips on getting more people involved in BJJ while helping our local neighbors.
- Education – We need to show people the value of Jiu-Jitsu. Both as a viable self-defense system for young and old…and as a way to develop a health body and mind. And of course the amazing impact it can have on our youth. Get involved in your local school systems. Whether it’s a career day, sporting events, speaking in schools, anti-bullying campaigns, demonstrations in schools… these are all great ways to spread the word. If you don’t have an “in” with schools, ask parents of your students who may be involved in PTA committees.
- Community – Get involved in your local community. Find out what events are happening for each season and volunteer your time to teach / perform a demo / speak, etc. Area groups and “meet-ups” are always looking for guest speakers, etc. Organize events where your Jiu-Jitsu school can participate as a group. This can be community / shoreline clean up efforts, volunteering at local events / homeless shelters, food bank collection efforts, holiday gifts for families in need, etc.
Remember, the goal is to pay our love of Jiu-Jitsu forward by helping others.
We rise by lifting others. To me this is the essence of being a true warrior…
